Ode to John Howard
One ought to be at least a little conciliatory of
John Howard's years in power, but I'll let someone else do that. The kindest
thing that I can say about the man, is that he stayed in power long enough for
us to throw him out, including it seems, out of his own seat. This hope of mine
was expressed in a previous blog, 'The
Rat to go down with his ship' . In this alone, Howard lived up to,
and fulfilled my expectations.
An incredible song, put together by an assorted
group of artists, and which I came across on youtube and imbedded into my web
site, lasts for eight minutes. Most of that eight minutes tells of John Howard's
lies, and for me the tone, the enthusiasm, and the driving beat encapsulates the
mood which has swept him from power. The journos and pundits will study the
entrails and spout their profound interpretations of why and how the day of
judgement came for John Howard, but for me there is an underlying factor which
the 'experts' will not put forward.I
think that the worst aspects of Howard's character were never really supported
as much as a simple perusal of the numbers would indicate. It was the
combination of weak or inappropriate leaders of the Labor Party, and the concern
about economics which overrode the distaste people felt for Howard. The steady,
conservative line taken by the Prime Minister elect, Kevin Rudd, presented a
leader the people of Australia could feel confidence in, and his ability to
negate the economic debate, along with a string of interest rate rises under
Howard, gave the people of Australia the opportunity to punish him for a whole
string of manipulative, racist, and cold hearted actions which even his own side
of politics didn't sit comfortably with. Here is the song I referred to, which
encapsulates why Howard was given his marching orders. Click for John
Howard's swan song.
